I got my start in fitness in college physically preparing myself to become an officer in the Marine Corps.  I had been a band geek in high school and had found that the occasional 3 sets of bench hadn’t really helped me.  After about 6 months of intense struggle during my ROTC PT sessions, I was in great shape.  I was physically and mentally tougher.  I became so enthusiastic about what fitness can do for you that I pursued my first Personal Training Certification and started training clients at the University Recreation Center.

In 2009 I graduated college and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.  During my 4 years in the Marine Corps I deployed to Afghanistan twice and was promoted to the rank of Captain.  Repeatedly I saw how key physical preparation was.

In 2013 I exited active duty and set out on my own as a self-employed Personal Trainer.  During this time I noticed something was missing from the fitness industry.  Too many trainers were all about themselves and not about their clients.  Too many gyms were all about what was easy to market, not what actually got the best results.  Too many good people were being let down by gimmicks and quick fixes as the nation’s obesity rate rises.

In 2016, with every penny I had and quite a few pennies I didn’t have thanks to some loans, I opened On Target Fitness in Portsmouth, NH.  I wanted it to be a different kind of gym.  I struggled at first.  I knew how to be a good coach but I didn’t know how to be a good business owner.  I was also struggling to keep my marriage afloat.

A year into business my wife left me and the gym was still struggling to turn a profit.  I hadn’t taken a paycheck since opening the gym and I was broke.  I knew I needed to get aggressive, get the knowledge I was lacking, and rapidly implement changes otherwise I would be letting down the amazing clients I already had and the staff that was trusting me.  I needed to burn the ships and go all in, so I did.  I sold the truck I couldn’t afford which bought be a couple of months rent and a ticket to the Results Fitness University Mentorship.  It was there that I could learn the business skills I so badly needed.

Since doing so my gym has grown dramatically!  I pay myself, I pay down debt, and we take a profit.  I went on to win the Results Fitness Business Owner of the Year Award in November 2018, The Entrepreneur of the Year award for the NH SBA in April 2019, and I was again a finalist for the Results Fitness Business Owner of the year award in October 2019.  My gym has been featured in The New Hampshire Union Leader, Seacoast Online, Business NH Magazine, and The Portsmouth Herald twice.

I have been able to stop being a slave to my business and to live a good life.  I positively impact people I care about every day.   I currently enjoy a spartan lifestyle aboard my 36 foot 1967 Chris-Craft Houseboat.  I like to read, explore the outdoors, and obsess about helping people find their strength.

I couldn’t be more proud of the gym, the team of coaches, or the clients we have the privilege of working with!"
