“I know what I need to do. I’m just not doing it.”

Here is a fun fact. Almost everyone who hires my coaches and I know what they need to do.  They want to get in shape and they know what to do.  And yet, they are hiring us to help them.  It’s a little weird to hire someone to tell you what to do when you know what to do isn’t it?

“Whats” are easy.  “Why’s” and “How’s” are where good coaches shine.

If you want to get in shape, you roughly know what to do.  Eat better and move more.  But you aren’t doing it.

“How” to eat better and move more is where you need the help.  That is where a coach comes in.  We know exactly how to write a program and exactly how each exercise needs to be done.  You can learn how so that you don’t feel lost and clueless in the gym.  It’s hard to feel confident that you aren’t going to end up injured if you feel like you don’t know how to workout.

“Why’s” are something a coach can’t do for you BUT a good coach can help you think about them.  During my strategy sessions I ask folks what their top 3 goals are and WHY they are important.  Without the “why”, its sort of like asking a GPS for directions but not telling it what the destination is.  Any directions will work (or not work) if you don’t know where you want to go.  As the Cheshire Cat says “If you don’t know where you are going and road can take you there”.

“Why’s” are required for anything that takes a long time and consistent effort.  You need a north star to guide you when things get tough.  There are going to be days when you don’t feel like working out, when you don’t feel like cooking a good meal, etc.  If you don’t use your emotions to motivate your success, which is what “why’s” do, then your lazy emotions will motivate you to failure.

Humans are emotionally driven creatures.  It’s how we are evolved.  Even the most logical or rational person is constantly making emotional based decisions without even realizing it.  Logic and rationality can only get us so far.  What is more motivating, working out because its good for you (logical) or because you want to set a good example for your kids.  I’ll guess your answer was the second one.

For all your “what’s”, “How’s”, and “Why’s”, I am here to help!
